The chicken has some thin nylon string stuck in her throat. Her crop feels a little hard, and she is silent.

I tried pulling the sting, but it didn't move and there was a little blood on it. I opened her mouth and see a few woodchips in there along w/ the string..shoudl I just cut it off? pull it out? WHAT?

Help please!

Also- when I was holding her, I noticed TONS of bugs jumped/crawled...were on- my shirt. I saw a few of these tiny bugs on the other chicken a few days ago, but there were probably 30-50 on my shirt...
Can I get DE- food grade at lowes? the other DE I bough said not to inhale or get on skin...

help!!!

Sevin dust works quick and best. Clean your coop and dust it too.

As for the string - if you pull it and it causes blood I can only suggest that you with hold feed. Offer bread soaked in olive oil and plenty of water for 24 - 48 hours and see if it will pass out the other end.

Do not forget that it is essential that you treat the housing, run and coop or reinfestation will occur. Remove all feed and water and do not let the birds in when you are treating...I would suggest using a permethrin or pyrethrin based spray and be sure to replace all bedding and litter and burn the old which you have taken out.

Prior to reading to NOT use sevin in the presence of the birds, I sprinkled it all around their house and touched my bird with 'dusty' hands. If the chickens aren't supposed to be around Sevin, how can I use it in their coop?

As I understand it, tomorrow I will be removing their bedding and tossing it into my flaming firepit, washing down everythign with a hose, soap and a scrub brush, letting it dry, and then 'dusting it with Sevin.

Am I supposed to empty out the Sevin from their house?? sweep it up or vacuum it??
What about the grassy areas where they hang out?

Any hints as to where the mites came from? I just bought a new bag of pine shavings- new brand, new store. The store has pets running around in it. Is it likely that the mites are in the bedding I bought?

I both showered and washed my clothes in very hot water after seeing the mites on my shirt- is that sufficient?

Just an update on the string, I cut it as closely as I could. I was able to pull itout some and cut is- I could see that it was all twisted up inside her- it was well lubricated w/ mucous. I gave the hen water and fed her about half a hot dog roll totally drenched in olive oil..she ate it all gladly.

Sevin dust or poultry dust is widely accepted to use for quick irradication of chicken mites and lice. Your chickens will be fine. You did the right thing dusting them and the coop. New bedding should be dusted too to prevent them from coming off the chickens and taking up residence and starting new colonies in the bedding. Dust again in 7 - 10 days.

Keep trying with the oil and bread over the weekend and see if you can get it to pass. If not you'll have to seek a vet that will treat poultry. The oil should help things slide but I can't promise it will solve the problem.

I gave them olive oil soaked wheat bread at 8am
I gave a hamburger bun soaked in canola oil at 4pm.

I'll do another before bed time...
IT's been almost 24 hours. No poopy string yet....

The chicken is walking around like normal and even making a little bit of her normal chicken noise.
