same here on tuesday morning. lost 5 of my birds and i can't find any trace of the 6th one. most were beheaded and their innards gone. found a few eggs outside the coop i could only guess were ones from inside the poor birds. it got 3 of my girls that hadn't started laying yet, my EE hen and one of my faverolles hens, and my missing girl was a faverolles pullet almost ready to start laying! i'm thinking it was a raccoon or some sort of weasel since nothing was destroyed to get into the coop. we secured it the best way we figured would work. but my surviving girls wouldn't go back in the coop at all yesterday. so i brought them into the basement and have them in my grow out/brooder pen till i can move them back tomorrow morning.

i have one bantam cochin girl that survived nearly getting killed by what ever it was. but she looks really rough, but she seems to be toughing it out! still eating and drinking fine but her neck got slightly skinned and one of her wings i believe was pulled on and had been drooping but she can move it slightly. i'm hoping she will recover but i don't think i will ever be able to put a roo in with her because of the neck issue.

i hope you catch what ever it is that is killing in your area!

That is so sad. I hope these skunks decide to move on or they may meet mr. bullet....can we shoot skunks? I havent seen a skunk around here since about 6 years ago when 2 of them fell in the pool and drowned, it was sad because they were babies, but now I feel that if they go after the chickens, I will have to "off" them!

i always thought you could shoot small game like that all year round if it is on your own property. but if it is a gun with powder you won't be able to. if you have a really high powered air gun and you get the skunk between the eyes on the first shot you shouldn't have any more problems with it! my dad was good for that!

the last couple of years my parents have been getting the family of skunks that like to move under their shed removed by a professional. last time we got charged about $80 to get rid of them all. i imagine that price has gone up considerably!

i was able to kill a ground hog that has been a menace in my yard. i found her little one (about the size of my bantam chickens) in my chickens' run area on monday afternoon and tried to shoo it out of there. i should have killed that one when i saw it. last night walking back up to the house i noticed that all my habanerro peppers had their leaves nibbled completely off! earlier this afternoon i saw moma hog in my other garden and she was so spooked by me she ran right into the wire fence and got her head stuck! so i took the opportunity and 'whacked' her!

i've heard some nasty stories about ground hogs attacking chickens over food so i didn't want them getting anywhere near my girls! i got a trap to see if i could catch Jr. or any other animal that might think about going after my girls again.
