He is doing real good. I left him with the girls he came home with. He still likes to be held and talked to. He likes to talk back.
Do you want shared custody?

Hi Everyone

I joined BYC because I went to the Chichester swap and bought some wonderful chicks. I see another one is coming now that I found this thread. I probably will attend so I can talk to people now that I know a bit more. My concern is will I be able to resist??? I have just enough for my coop. But I have to admit I wouldn't mind a few more...

I am sure I will be good, but I am hoping to talk to some people about local predators. Which are the most prevalent in central NH?

thanks!

Deb

I have lost more chickens to hawks than anything else. Only one to a fox. There is a thread on the BYC site called "predators and Pests" and I read it several times a day. It is facinating all the different predators in different areas...oh, and what the advise to be done to dispatch them, including neighbors dogs! And I thought kids read these boards! ewe!!!!

Thats the nice thing about hatching in cartons, they DONT roll around, they just pop out of the egg ! I set the bantam americanas on the 21st of April and just woke up to peeping and one is out and dry allready and 4 others are pipped. I counted on the calendar and they were not due till the 13th??? Whats up with that??? That bator should be a ppeping rock concert by the next few days if all hatch as planned. By the way, it is the new Hovabator 1588 !! Might have to invest in another one of them!

My bantam eggs always hatched out a couple days early before I adjusted the temp on my Genesis bator. The instructions recommend trying a couple hatches first before making any adjustments. I found my bator to be running consistently high based on early hatches and temp readings from multiple thermometers. I'm so impatient, that it was kinda nice to have them come out early. But I know it's better for them to stay in there for the normal length of time. Many had bloody navels before I turned the temp down.

Good luck!

Thanks Muffi! I did notice the last one to come out still had the bottom of the eggshell stuck to it with a lot of goopy's on it. The thermometer has read 101.2 for the past week, and when it frist was running, it read 100.2 so I am not sure why it went up a degree. Maybe the develpoing chicks inside??

OK, not chicken related, but have to ask my friends here...has anyone evr had a dog have a swelling of its hind leg (something...edema) that is a fluid like swelling? And if so, what was the diagnosis or what caused it. Also has anyone had a dog with lymphoma??? same thing...symptoms??? Treatment???

Hi Darbella

Thanks
I have read through those posts about predators and pests, and you are right there is a lot of good information. I have already had my first incident with a hawk. The first day I let the chicks out into their covered pen (covered thanks to BYC advice) I had a hawk visit for the entire time they were out. That convinced us we have to have a covered run. We have a guard dog who generally keeps the coyotes and other mammals away but we have had a bear visit our bird feeders in the past. I was just curious if others have had issues with bears especially.
