I never knew how vocal they can be as they are getting ready to roost...is this a friendly conversation they are having amongst themselves or are they complaining...?

In my experience, my chickens did both.

They would cluck and cackle at each other when shifting around on the roost (sometimes, a bossier hen wouldn't like where she had ended up and would proceed to climb OVER the others and shove them around to get a better spot). The "Ba-GAWK-buck-buck-buck..." and growling noises seemed to be more complaining.

When they were all settled, they would make a sweet sound a lot of chicken owners describe as singing. This is supposedly a sound of happiness and contentment. Sometimes the rooster would cluck quietly to the hens, and they would answer him. I sort of imagined they were like a loving husband and wife (er, wives) having a conversation about their day...
