You would also be very surprised at how dim people can be, in these types of situations.

I remember one story of a hiker, on the news, that accidentally locked her keys inside her SUV. Well, it was cold and it had begun to rain. She died of exposure and hypothermia, sitting next to her car. Someone who was thinking correctly(or had any sense), would have picked up a large rock and broke a window on the vehicle and drove home. She was hiking in the mountains, there would have been plenty of rocks.

So maybe the thief didn't even think of climbing out, or didn't try very hard...

If it was me I would have gotten at least ONE scoop of that dirt and slowly start sifting it down on top of him until he started screaming or something... just to make my point.

I probably couldn't do it well, by his description. I am pretty sure to get close to his setup by doing a google search. It's scary how much info is available to us via internet.
