hi guys, we have been told by our local vet to syringe feed our chicken until she starts eating on her own. she is currently undergoing tests bloods etc. he told us to syringe feed her 20-30 mls a day as she has been losing weight and isn't eating independently. now i am really worried we fed her earlier and gave her around 10-12 mls and she had the same amount this morning. her crop felt very full so obviously we stopped now she has been sick after being picked up. I am so worried it may have got into her lungs or we have made her worse any ideas? any help much appreciated. we have been syringe feeding her this stuff given to us by the vets which needs to be mixed with water so it is very runny.

Hi, what is she undergoing tests for? Does her crop feel squishy, particularly first thing in the morning?
Crop should empty overnight so if it feels full or squishy in morning she may have sour crop which if too full may make her vomit and be unwell. It would also mean she would not be able to eat food as basically her crop would be full of gunk and nothing else will pass- hence losing weight.
Though if she has seen a vet I would assume they have checked for this.

If her crop is squishy- you may need to 'tip' her. Give a good massage to crop and then tip her upside down- Only for a few seconds at a time (no more than about 5-7) as she is unable to breathe whilst in that position. Hopefully a load of smelly gunk would come out and then you should repeat as necessary (It quite often refills) I always give live white maggots after the proceedure as they eat through the nastiness thats blocking her crop and will give a protein boost
Repeat for a few days or until all gunk has gone...only when all gunk has gone - it's then a good idea to give live natural pro biotic yoghurt (don't give beforehans as it will only add to the sour crop.

Without knowing what her symptoms are as to why she is undergoing tests though I would perhaps check with your vet.

thanks for replying, she is undergoing tests for possible kidney problems, her symptoms are losing weight, not eating, drinking more, runny poo etc. has gradually gone downhill even though we have taken her to the vets but unfortunately to one who knew not a lot about chickens. have now found one who knows what he is doing and told us to syringe feed her. she definately isn't crop bound as it is going down by the morning. and then filling back up when we feed her. i am just concerned that it has got in her lungs or something but she doesn't seem to be struggling to breathe or anything?

Have you discussed Peritonitis? Symptoms sound similar. Sadly I have lost two chooks to this (though they rallied on for months with the help of Antibiotics)
I currently have another chook showing signs of this (particularly with her runny poohs) and am now considering hormone implants.
Depending on whether it is peritoniis (and how advanced it is)- I know it can eventually cause breathing difficulties as the organs get pushed up by the infection.
How old is she and do you know if she is laying? I do hope she gets better- how long will the tests take?
In the meantime just do your best feeding her, will she be 'tempted' by any thing at all? Mealworms or corn, grapes etc?- give her some warm sugar water slowly via syringe if necessary to keep her energy up and make sure she is warm and comfortable. Good Luck
