Good day,

We are newer chicken owners and woke up to our rooster having one incredibly swollen ankle. It looks like he has an abrasion across the top - we soaked it in warm water and sprayed with vetericyn and put some neosporin on it as well. We're wrapping in gauze for now. He can't use his toes/foot at all and it's so swollen. It was chilly last night, but only down to 40 and his comb and other foot are fine, and as of yesterday, he was fine. There just seems to be the swelling and large skin issue on top, and we were hoping someone might have some experience/advice on what we might do next for him. Could this have been a cut that got infected (could it go from nothing of note to this in one day)? Thanks so much for any help or direction anyone can provide.

It looks like an injury and possibly a broken lower leg. I would use chlorhexidene (Hibiclens and water half strength) or Betadine, and when swelling is down some, consider splinting the leg and foot with a lot of padding, something rigid, and vet wrap or tape. Here is a picture of an aluminum finger splint applied to the top to the foot and ankle, and a video of splinting a leg:

Any updates? We have a roo with a similar issue

Do you have any pictures? Have you examined it to make sure there is not a hair or string wrapped around the leg, or a leg band has become embedded?
It was warm to the touch, so I gave him some LA200. The pic where I’m holding his leg is the first day before I soaked/cleaned/wrapped. The standing pics are 3 days later after I soaked. Then, I treated and wrapped. He does put weight on it. Definitely no strings or embedded ties.

The swelling could be a sprain or a fracture, and it looks like some injury to the skin. It can take several weeks for a bad sprain or a broken bone to heal. Forcing rest by confining to a pen or dog crate near food and water would be good. If you could see a vet for an xray, you could rule out a fracture. Meloxicam is an anti-inflammatory medicine can be prescribed to help with swelling or pain.
