If you don't have a large syringe to draw the fluid from the hen, you should remove the syringe from the needle and expell the fluid from the syringe. Do not remove the needle each time you need to empty the syringe. Each time you puncture her skin/abdomen you create a new entry site for bacteria. Good luck with your hens.

I am having this problem with one of my chickens -- she is all of a sudden walking like a penguin. I did the water bath and will see how she is doing tomorrow. If it is fluid, where do you insert a needle to remove fluid? How does that work. I am really new to backyard chickens and don't want to hurt her, but also don't want to lose her. Any help/advice would be much appreciated.

is I am new to BYC myself, I am having the same issue with my RIR. I have her soaking in a warm bath which she is enjoying. What if I don't have a syringe with a needle? Can I sterilize a sewing needle then apply light pressure?

My chick is doing great. After her warm bath we kept her away from the others for the night. While she wasn't doing much better in the morning, she was doing much better after she layed that afternoon. She did have a bit of a bulge right below her vent (it wasn't an egg), and.....when I squeezed it a lot of fluid squirted out her vent. The fluid was greenish. That was two days ago and she seems to be just fine now. She is laying and behaving normally. Not sure what was wrong, but am sure the warm bath started the healing.

I wonder if I should squeeze below her vent also. My chicken is resting now, but if there is no change by morning, I'll repeat her bath & try to release her fluid. Thanks so much for responding & I am so happy your girl is better. My girl will be one year old in July so she isn't a chick.

Mine did the same we gave her a warm soak while massaging her vent area, them put a child size syringe medicene giver full of olive oil squeezed up her vent. After a few days she's back to normal. I really think the syringe of olive oil did the trick

Try inserting tip of syringe full of olive oil up her vent while she's in your arms on her back .it worked for me in a couple of days she should pass a oily egg if she is egg bound

its hard for me to know if it is an egg or maybe fluid. I'm going to try and give her a warm bath and have her drink some olive oil. i could try and help her expel it, if i knew for sure it is an egg but i just don't know.

My Americauna is walking like a penguin. i have read a lot about impacted eggs. she has a bulge between her legs and it is soft when i felt it. I'm thinking the only thing i can try incase its a soft shell impaction is soaking her in warm water like i have read. she walks but you can tell she really doesn't want to if she doesn't have to but she does try to keep where the other hens are. she will eat. maybe, i just need to keep an eye on her? any help on this would be appreciated.
i have also read about putting a little oil below, but i really don't want to do anything i don't know how and make things worse.
i am new to chickens so it makes me sad to see her like that.

I had this happen 3 times so far (chicken walking like a penguin) Right now it's my long horn she has been separated from my other 42 hens to mend. This is her 2nd week and is doing great ! She is starting walk like a chicken What I have done with all the 3 hens that this has happen to is, I start feeding her plain yogurt with a tiny bit of calcium in it every day. Then I make a mash with her layer pellets add warm water the I add some molasses for energy. I also give her all the fruits she want and bread, it sounds like alot but it works for me every time. Good luck with your baby .
