Chicken wire for run apron?

I don't see how it would be any better laid horizontally.

It works because it's embedded in the ground with the turf to help hold it place.
They won't be able to tear one spot and then push through as they could on a vertical wall

I've been following this post with interest. I am planning a coop that will be approx. 2 to 2.5 feet off the ground. Question is, should I wrap the bottom of the coop (pen area) with hardware cloth and use an apron on the pen or wrap both coop and pen in hardware cloth?

I used my left over chicken wire for the roof of the run to keep the hawks out. I am also using it to divide the run on the inside to keep 2 groups separated. I will note that we had been using chicken wire for our run (set up before I found this forum). The part of the wire I unburied had rusted through in places and was weakened in others (I am not using those parts for the roof). Buried the bottom 12" of the hardward cloth with a bend outward at 6" so anything digging will run into fencing horizontally and vertically.
