Hello everyone, I noticed today that my black Easter egger was not coming out of the coop, then later today I noticed that she was limping really bad from what I could see out of the window. I went down there and was limping a lot so I took a sock in made it into a long strip that I wrapped around her leg, I’m not sure if that’s a good idea but I know with people it helps to wrap the leg. I don’t remember anything being wrong with the chicken last night and she was in the coop, but when she came out she Was like this. Other then her limp, she has no visible injuries. She doesn’t want to put any weight on it. I have had raccoons problems and I am working on getting rid of them. It could be possible that she her leg caught in something. I have 1/2 inch wiring that I put around my 1 inch poring in my safe run. If anyone has any ideas of how it may have happened or how to help her that would be Wonderful!! Thanks!

Some things I would do would be to check the bottom of her foot for scab that could be bumblefoot. Look over her foot and leg for bruising, swollen joints, or the bones being displaced. Does she put weight on it, hold it up, and can she move the toes and leg? Does she drag the leg?

How old is she? Was she vaccinated for Mareks? How high are your roosts?

Injury is the most common reason for limping. Sprains or broken bone can take several weeks to heal. I would probably remove the wrap to see if there is any swelling. Vet wrap is good for splinting, but splinting might not be necessary if there is not a broken bone. You need to use your judgement on whether it seems to help her get around.

Frequently they need to rest an injured leg. Some use a pen or dog crate with food and water to force rest. If she is controlling her activity that may not be necessary. Roosting might be hard and cause more trouble.
