Hi, I recently 'aquired' a chicken from a chicken farm, she is a layer but when plucked from the floor she had just about been killed off by the other chickens that were in her barn 12000 of them altogether. Anyway she looked really really bad, they had started to kick dirt over her and she had open wounds all over her. I brought her home and put her in solitary confinement, after a few days her eyes still hadn't reopened, her skin around her eyes had gone from pink to dark green and then back to pink, she didn't move much but i offered her food and water. Anyway I decided she needed to open her eyes as she'd improved so much, I figured she wanted to live, so we gently bathed them and peeled back the light scab that had formed, and voila she could see again (it probably didn't help we did it on a sunny day as she blinked alot!) Well she's gone from strength to strength and is feathering up nicely, the only problem is she can't walk really, she can get round her rabbit run, I put her in and out of bed at night etc, one foot is fine, but the other seems to be curled under her. My question is, does anyone know anything I can do to help her fix her foot? I don't think I should keep her alive if she can't walk, but I don't want to give up too soon either, she is eating and drinking well, enjoys sunbathing and stretching her wings and feathers out in the sun. Any ideas?

Thanks, I'll have a good look tomorrow and see what I can find. I honestly didn't think she'd make it, even when she was here she just sat for days with her eyes closed not really moving. Chickens can be savage little beggars though can't they, they probably picked on her because of her foot

Anyway I'll see what I can see tomorrow, thanks x

Checked out her foot but it looks fine, just paralysed I think? I think I'll give her another week and see how she does, I don't want to be cruel, it's ok in this dry spring weather but when it gets really cold or wet it won't be much fun for her

Check the link in my signature. It is a great site created by another BYC member, I have found a lot of geat info there.

I hope your hen recovers. It sounds like you are doing a great job with her.

i am new to this, But i also had a Roo who was suddenly attacted by the hens in the coop and brought him back from near death. He also has a foot that has curled toes and it has been about 3 weeks and he is getting along fine on it, but his toes are starting to turn purple/yellow/green (like brusing ). i am unable to have him with the others right now because they still keep trying to peck at him. i am thinking a possible stroke happened with all the blood lose that he had. the foot just seems paralyzed and not broken. i can move it and it does not cause him any pain.

Thanks I had a look at that webpage, it's got loads of good stuff on there, but nothing that can help her i don't think.

She tends to hobble round on her hock, with alot of flapping of wings etc, she can't even stand up let alone walk. I guess only time will tell x

My Rooster was the same way......it took him a couple of weeks to get strong enough to walk around on it. i went to the vet today and they said that when he was attacked by the others they could have hit his hip joint nerve and caused paralysis in the foot. the toes are turning purple and we are going to give in an antibotic to see if that helps out.
