The antibiotics should help as many respiratory infections are bacterial.

My chickens have been sick now for a month. I treated them with aspirin in their water, electrolytes, probiotics and a thing called Vet Rx which is similar to Vicks vaporub. It helped them to breathe better but they are still coughing and my rooster has stopped crowing! Where do I find Tylan 50 or some antibiotics for them. None of the vets in our area treat poultry.

Thank goodness for this site!!! A few of my Sexlinks are presenting with these symptoms. I would like to try natural remedies first...any ideas before going for antibiotics?

Welcome to BYC. Can you describe all symptoms you are seeing? Is there a watery,foamy eye, nasal drainage, sneezing, gasping, wheezing, or rapid breathing? Any swelling around an eye or the face? Respiratory diseases can be caused by viruses, bacteria, or fungus. Only bacterial diseases such as MG or coryza will respond to antibiotics, so just make sure they are eating, drinking, and give them probiotics or a little plain yogurt daily in there water. Some claim that garlic, oregano, turmeric, and other things can help with immunity. Most viruses will run their course over several weeks. The thing that can complicate a respiratory disease is having a secondary disease which may spread to the air sacs. Respiratory diseases are contagious, and can make carriers of your flock for various amounts of time, some for life. Oral antibiotics are now only abailable through a vet in the US, but Tylan 50 injectable can be used orally. There is a very good article on common diseases of poultry from University of Florida if you Google that. Also do a search at the top of this page on respiratory diseases.

I seem to have a chocolate Wyandotte bantam with many of the issues you stated.. Eggcessive. She has watery/ foam eye.. sneezing.. wheezing. The watery/ foam eye seems to have disappeared since I brought her in the house. She has a wheeze and sneezing still. She is eating and drinking. Acts quite normal.
She was with 20 other girls, 3 ducks and on cold nights joined by two Super African geese, and 8 roosters in the next pen. 5 peafowl in a pen at the back of the barn too. No other bird shows any sign of what she shows.
I'm hoping the other things you mentioned, nasal drainage, gasping, rapid breath and any swelling on her face isn't going to hit her too. I have her in a rubbermade tub in my family room a few feet from my wood burning enclosed fire place. So plenty of heat..
I live in Canada and some if the things I see mentioned to treat her I don't have access to. I do have poly-tonine a complex. ( vitamins)..that I have in her water. With that I did read that antibiotics may not treat what she has..
if I'm missing something feel free to add what you think .. it's always appreciated.

Antibiotics will treat bacterial diseases such as MG. She may have that or she may have a virus. In Canada, they do sell oxytetracycline at vets' offices I think. Tylosin or Tylan is very good to give orally if you could get it from a vet. I would keep your hen warm, and make sure that she is drinking well. Some cultured yogurt about a tsp per day will give her probiotics. Most respiratory diseases will last a month or so. I would gradually get her used to cool twmps again before she goes out to the coop.

Hi.. I will check today with my local vet about the two medications you mentioned. They are not chicken vets but may help. There are no bird vets within an hour drive. She is in the house, has become my bathroom chicken.She loves sitting on the large counter and look in the mirror which is on the wall that faces out the door and watch me. She will venture out in the kitchen just to see what's going on then return to her counter. Her only symptom now is the gurgling sound still. It's not consistent either. She's eating and drinking anything I put in front of her. I'm constantly cleaning .. lol. I will give her yogurt..I tried this in the past but they didn't really like it. They seem to hate food on their beaks.. they will eat a little, rub their beaks on the ground then walk away.
I have a sun room and when it's warm she spends some of her day in there. I will not put her out with the other girls for another few weeks.
