Chicken with large scab, should I remove it??

Hello, I have a 3ish year old hen, she had gotten a wound on her back that healed with a scab, but recently got a small infection. The scab now it's constantly getting larger and larger(taller) and had a bad odor. I was told by a friend who is a vet, that I should remove it and dress it with neosporin and blue-cot. How do I remove the scab, just by studying and slowly working it off, and how should I keep the hen calm?
Any help or hints would be great!! I can post pictures anyone would like!

Soaking her in Epsom salts or warm soapy water for a time can help to soften a scab enough to allow it to be removed.
