Chicken with Peepers on Has a Swollen Nostril!

Recently I had a pecking problem so a put some C clip peepers on my chickens. Just today I noticed one the hens that has the peepers on has a swollen nostril! As soon as I took the peepers off to let the swelling sort itself out, she immediately started pecking agan. What should I do? Sharpen the axe? As of now she has the peepers back on.

Better to be peeped than culled, I would say. Let them stay on her, I vote!! No mean hens allowed!!! You are doing the right thing.

If the peepers fail, I vote cull. Also, you could separate her into a dog crate or something like that with food and water, and take them off to let the swelling go down.

There was a little blood involved, so I have taken the peepers off, and she is in a dog cage to heal. Do you think a week away from the flock could stop the pecking? Before the peepers, I had tried separating her for 3-4 days but that didn't work.

I tried putting on peepers that use a pin, because the pin is much smaller than the C clip and might not cause as much swelling. I think I did puncture the nasal septum but I couldn't get the blinders on because the hen struggled too much. Will she be OK? Do you think that the puncture will get seriously infected?

Sorry I don't know.

They do make pinless peepers that some people say works for them. I'd try those. I haven't used them myself and so can't tell you whether they are any good. Some people warm them up by putting them in some warm water beforehand to make them more pliable before fitting them on the chicken.

Can anybody weigh in that has experience with chicken injuries? Do chickens easily get infected?
