Chicken with Worms?

where I live, it is warm outside, at night also but she wont eat the safegaurd that i soaked into bread, so i will have to give it to her through a syringe, also I CANNOT FIND FISH ZOLE ANYWHERE!!! its like it doesn't exist. Once she is treated how do you keep other birds from getting sick like this in the future? Because she isn't my first that I have had to get sick with these exact same kind of symptoms and unfortunately I havent had a single hen survive from being sick like this. This is extrememely frustrating because I have chicks that will soon be moving into the pen with the older hens and I can't risk them getting sick .

I agree with Casportpony. You'll have to purchase metronidazole from a vet. Here, it costs about $25 for 5 tablets. It may cost more or less from a vet where you live. The metronidazole should be given first to kill the protozoa, then use the safeguard to kill the cecal worm which carries the protozoa.
In the future, set up a regular worming schedule to prevent this from happening. Perhaps worming your birds once every 6-10 months depending on your soil conditions will work for you.

Originally you started out with what you identified as roundworms. In post #8, I recommended Valbazen as it kills more worms because it contains Albendazole. You had Wazine, so I said go ahead and use it for the roundworms. Then came symptoms of blackhead you mentioned. There is always a possibility of a bird being plagued by more than one type of worm. Broad spectrum wormers do the job many others won't. Others may have confused you with their banter. Dawg was correct about the order of metronidazole (flagyl) first, then use Safeguard (fenbendazole) or Albendazole. You should have wormed with the Valbazen I told you to 10 days after the first worming. It doesn't matter now though. You can still help your bird overcome the problem by keeping the bird hydrated, eating and getting the right meds to do the job.

Ok, thanks everyone for all the help I really appreciate it but just to update everyone(even though you probably dont care lol!) I called my vet that I use for my goats and donkey and she has given me instructions on worm medicine and special feed, etc. and I wormed her about 30 minutes ago and hopefully she will recooperate and get back to her old self! Once again thanks for all the help

Of course we care otherwise we wouldn't try to help. That's a good vet that helped you. Keep on trucking! I hope your hen gets better very soon. Keep some Flagyl and Valbazen on hand for the future. Good luck and let us know how the hen recuperates.

Well thanks for the help. Hopefully she will make it and I will worm all the hens annually so we don't have this problem! It has been a pain in the butt haha
