Chickens are work

However, I haven't seen any posts on BYC mention that they can buy just 1 or 2 chicks from the farms stores.

I can and have bought just 1 chick. The employees asked if I had other chickens but that was it.

The store's counter to Easter gifting seems to be to not offer chicks around Easter time.

There's a lot more people looking to adopt a rescue dog in Manhattan than there are in rural Texas and there's a lot fewer dogs to rescue in Manhattan than in Texas... So they move them around until they can't any more or they find a home and, ultimately, it's working.

Most shelters/rescues in my neck of the woods are stocked with dogs from out of the area... my last three were brought in from California and Texas. We just don't have enough dogs available for adoption. They get picked up so fast that many dogs are snapped up before the shelters can even post their photo online, so it makes it tricky if you are hoping for specific breeds or types of dogs.

I remember them saying something like Dept of Ag, and the number was set to discourage people from buying 1 or 2 cute chicks at Easter and discarding them later. Also, this seems to vary by state. I have heard of some being able to, usually when staff knows them and that they already have chickens, as @rosemarythyme points out. There's a small 'farm' store (pet food, gifts, floral, horse stuff) near me that has no minimum, and their chicks are in open bins easily accessible by the public. Bought once from them, with no problems, but won't do it again.

Surprised they don't as that's prime chick time. Small store or....?

When I first moved here some friends bought me two chicks. I was surprised they were able to get only 2- they knew I was talking about getting chickens. I appreciated the thought, but I wasn’t at all set up for chickens, was still in the process of moving in! I learned a lot and fast! They both ended up being Roos so maybe that’s why the store was willing to sell only 2?

Not sure if they do it every year but the last time I looked there weren't new chicks available for about 2 weeks before Easter. It is a fairly small store (like yours, they sell everything from gardening stuff to pet supplies) though they seem to move a decent number of chicks each year.

They're pretty good about keeping an eye on the chick bins and they keep them covered (though not fenced off). I've never seen anyone other than employees accessing the bins. The nearest TSC actually doesn't look bad either, considering all the horror stories I've heard, as the chicks seem properly labeled and the chick section is fenced off and locked.

Uh, I bought two from my local feed store for valentines day, as a first time chicken keeper, no mention of a minimum purchase. Of course, that particular store delivers $1000 of feed to me weekly, so my reputation for good animal husbandry remains untarnished.

And I'm on here to learn what I dont know. :D

of course. As I mentioned, it likely varies by location, or state.
