Chickens at Pet Stores?

I think they mean for in city laws the animals have to be sold at a pet store to be considered pets. Chickens are not considered pets. They are classified livestock and would likely fall outside that code. Although that particular part of the code does not specifiy livestock. Being sold at a feedstore would not help them fall inside the code. Chickens are not sold in petstores here because they are not considered pets. You'd get laughed out of the store for asking about chickens. I even got some odd looks for asking if they'd sell button quail and then told to try the feed store. Chickens fall under your local livestock laws unless otherwise specified in the city code.

If a feedstore sells animals also they have to have a license which is usually the same as a pet store license. Depends on the state though.

Why not call all the pet stores in the area, ask if they sell chickens at easter time, our does. Then get a letter from them saying that they do. That would then help your case, maybe. Worth a try I guess. Seems mean saying chickens are not pets, alot of cities in NC allow them. Good luck maybe you could help change the law if you are up to the work involved.

Someone complained about our rooster, which we originally thought was a hen, and so the city is trying to make us get rid of them. We have since given up our rooster. We have started a website at www.saveourchickens.com if you'd like to read more that explains the whole long story.

I would have imagine if the feed store is IN town and they are selling chicks, why the heck the city folks buy them???????? (if the city does not allow chicks or chickens)

Its just easy asscess to buy them and neither the manager or clerk ask for your address to make sure you are in city limits or not.

I'm already working on that. Our next step is actually to either bring a lawsuit against the city (but I'm not sure about legal costs) or to put a referendum on the ballot.

Gosh at this point, I think I would send them on vacation, and let the animal control come in and see that they are gone, and then bring them home. Chickens are so darned harmless, I can never figure out all the broohaha about owning them!

Cause they don't know it's against the laws or they don' t think they'll get caught. How many people on here have chickens knowing they aren't entirely within the law? I can think of at least 5 posts I've seen admitting that. How many just plain haven't looked up the law? There are probably lots more than the ones that have. Since the feed store doesn't keep track the city doesn't know if the chickens are going in town or being bought by people out of town driving in for feed or something so they can't really stop a feed store from selling them. If people are there to buy feed they probably live out of town with livestock so it makes sense to sell chicks.
