Chickens at Pet Stores?

I don't think it will help you to get OTHER city's code though. All over Seattle, it is legal to own up to 3 hens.

I have not had a chance to read your link to your story but how long did you let the rooster crow before the law came down on you? That might be part of why they are pushing you now if it was a long battle for you to decide to give up the rooster?

We have a pet shop here that sells chicks through the spring and summer but most places, feed stores included, quit selling when school starts back up.

I know for myself, I am over my legal limit on pullets so if I get a noisy one, that one HAS to go and goes pretty quickly. Now the troublemakers have been replaced by docile breeds so hopefully, no more screamers!

They are morons. Husbandry requires breeding, hence the necessity of having a male also...having hens with no roo cannot be husbandry. Tell them to check webster's dictionary and college courses in Animal Husbandry for a definition of their accusation.

Here is the first part of Wikipedia's definition of husbandry

"Animal husbandry, also called animal science, stockbreeding or simple husbandry, is the agricultural practice of breeding and raising livestock. It has been practiced for thousands of years, since the first domestication of animals."

Try that argument with them to stall for time to prove they are pets. Also give them the link to this site...we will tell them they are spoiled brats and pets. Mine certainly are.

Try looking for a pet store that deals in only birds. I baught my RIR at a pet store but all the guy sold was birds and more birds and chickens was one of them. I would also contact the local humane department and ask them because zoning may say one thing but if the humane deaprtment say another thre you are.

About 2 weeks, and he was just developing his crow, so he wasn't all that loud yet.

Just be careful that they are not the cornish X meat birds because they often don't live long.

Maybe you can ask your local pet store to get an order in of layers.

I read on the OP's site(in the guestbook) that they lost the case.

Can they appeal it somehow?

Your feed store might sell them, and it's okay with the city and county but if you live in a neighborhood with a HMO (home owners assoc, check with them to see if chickens are allowed in your neighborhood, otherwise you could be fined.

Sorry for the silence the last few days, my wife and I have been discussing options. Yes, we can appeal it to Common Pleas Court. The other route we can take would be to do a referendum on the ballot. They may have won the battle, but, I'm not saying that they have won the war yet. We will see what we decide to do next.

where I live in the city code livestock and chickens are in 2 separate clauses. Chickens are in the same clause as Rabbits And are allowed where livestock pigs, sheep, cows and the like are prohibited all together . However we do have certain guidelines for keeping them, cleanliness, and they have to be 75 feet from human dwellings other than your own. I don't understand why different places do different things different ways. thanks Hope this isn't off the subject.
