CHICKENS BRAIN DEAD! LIES!

Hmm, sounds like you've got some special chickens there, Q9.

I agree.... My chickens teach each other where to roost, raise their own babies, and plot to steal cookies from humans, sooo..... I can't say that mine are dumb, just more like tiny feathered dinosaurs.

Not to hijack the thread -- but theoldchick --

your pictures are absolutely MARVELOUS. Just fantastic and the captions are just excellent. Have you ever thought about making a book at something like www.mypublisher.com ?

It is soooo simple to make a nice hard cover book. If you make one let me know and I will buy a copy. Your photos and your flock are beautiful!!!!

Chickens are smart and each has a distinct personality.

Lily- a barred cochin, the favorite of my outcast roo, will run between my legs for protection. she knows if she jumps up on a chair or the well house she gets more treats. And when she is broody she will roll the eggs into the broody pen.

Panda & oreo- they are sisters, and they act like it, they fight over who gets to lay first and where. They walk around constantly talking. And when panda preens, oreo must do it too, in almost the same manner/order.

Suki- is a silkie, a tiny one that can't see very well. But she knows that if she is constantly touching her rooster, that he will lead her to water and food, and even steady her as she gets up on the rooster.

Joanie- is a big girl, and she will fly up to the storm cellar roof and peck at the kitchen window for treats, and if that doesn't work, she will waddle around to the front door and wait!

All my chickens know that “here chick chick” means treats. And “night night” means get up on the roost lights are going out. And when I tap on a perch, or high surface they are to jump up. Some have been taught to hold poses for showing. And most all know their names.

Actually...

I have yet to meet a "smart" chicken. Obviously, they're going to be less intelligent than dogs or other such animals, but they seem outrageously stupid despite their biological complexity otherwise. Maybe ours are just uniquely idiotic, but it took them WEEKS to figure out that bread was not going to try to kill them. We had to train them to go into their coop at night - they could not figure out how the ramp worked. They apparently don't grasp repeated patterns - one of them HATES being picked up, yet it still walks over to me whenever I open the door to peck at an exposed zip tie.

Is this just a Rhode Island Red thing? Our new white Leghorns aren't quite as stupid and they're a lot friendlier, though they still haven't figured out that bread is for eating, even when we break it into chunks. They still freak out at anything made of plastic, too.
point made! One has a personality! :p

I'm sorry but when a chick hatches out and is self sufficient right away they are not dumb animals. Maybe it is just instinct BUT many other animals are not able to do the things a chick can do right after being born. I wouldn't say they are the smartest but def not the least. I agree with previous posters. Doesn't matter how smart or dumb they all need to be treated with respect.

My favorite chicken knows her name, no joke. We are around her so much and talk to her so much that she knows her name. She also knows that if she screams, yells, and clucks her head off, we will eventually bring her inside for a little while. We knows when we have food, and knows that if she begs enough, we will give in and give her a bite. She loves to be held, and could snuggle for hours! Well, at least until she poops or gets hot. :p
I have absolutely no doubts that chickens have personalities!
