Chickens do the darndest things

I have a bantam Cochin frizzle roo that 'answers' me whenever I call him, comes running across the yard (can't fly, useless wings), and won't 'talk' to anybody except me, no matter how hard they try to sound exactly like me.

I have 23 almost 3week olds brooding in a huge refrigerator card board box in my garage. They have nightly flight school sessions. This involves jumping off of the various stuffed animals in the brooder and flap, flap, flapping to get airborne. For those who can't get into the air, they flap, flap, flap while running from one end of the brooder to the other. When one starts, they all join in. Some are getting quite proficient- flying from the ground to land atop the feeders. They seem to have flight school in the early evening when I come to check on them, almost as if they want to perform for me. I love chickens.....

That is great - chicken flight school. You should get that on video and share with us.
I especially like the idea of the little ones that can't fly runnign around flapping their wings and trying to get lift.

My almost 3 week old OEG bantam rooster Murray (who tries to crow by the way) decided this morning that he was going to pick a fight with his mom who is known as Ebay.
Well Murray flogged Ebay from the front once and Ebay stood taller and head held higher and gave him a look only a mother could give their child that talked back. Well apparently Murray didn't take the verbal ques and did it again. Well let me tell you Ebay gave him his come upings and then some!!! I don't think Murray will be doing that anytime soon. Cracked me up!!!

Oh - I had 15 chicks in two brooders in the laundry room and the BRs were very skittish - everytime I walked out there they would 'spook' and cause a big ruckus and scare the Sultans and it would just be crazy. So I discovered they like singing - even MY singing. AND their favorite songs are "You Can Fly" from Peter Pan and "Talk to the Animals" from Dr. Doolittle (the original - yes, I'm old). They would go right to sleep. (OK, maybe I just bored them.) Seriously, the BRs would go to sleep and I turned around and the Sultans were all asleep, too.

So...if you want to calm you peepers down...

I have a cream Brabanter, her name is "Petite Miss". She's a very prissy girl, and thinks she's the queen of everything....Her Royal Highness MUST be picked up anytime she eyeballs you a certain way......If you don't pay her the proper attention by scooping her up and petting her, then she will fly right up onto your head!

And you are in BIG TROUBLE if you pay attention to someone else first! BIG TROUBLE!

She's my favorite and I just love her!

Silky Sue I think Powder is in love with you, sounds like courting to me. What a gentleman and romantic he is.I think when you accepted the straw that counts as an engagement. Better be careful IF you don't want it to go any father.Please let him down easy

Um, I can't think of anything my roo does that is NOT odd, weird, or cute (sometimes all three simultaneously...but not always!) Let's see...he thinks I am his hen, is certain he lives in my apartment (will run up two steep flights of stairs up my deck), makes me nests and finds me bugs, mates with my shoes, asks to be picked up while I sit at my computer by pecking my leg, crows constantly (seriously, non-stop) when I force him to act like a chicken (ie, live in the dog run with the other chickens). Sometimes, I give up and let him in the house and he makes me nests (cute noise included) on my bed and sofa.....odd? yeah...

My orp hens love Diet Coke. If I leave a can where they can reach it, they will peck at the top till it falls over, then stick their beaks in the opening and drink it up! I try not to let them have any, but sometimes I forget. They'll do the same thing with a can of beer. And sometimes, you know how a little will be around that groove in the top of the can? I've seen them suck that up!
