They don't need to be small...you can break one egg shell in half and they can eat it just like that.

Absolutely! And I've been told that larger pieces dissolve slower and are more effective in boosting their calcium needs. Not completely sure I believe that but I stopped grinding mine and now I give them a single crush with a flat meat pounder.
