Why is it okay to eat cows, pigs, and chickens, but when someone mentions dog or cat meat.... everyone is like "Aw, come on" or "Aww, that's so mean" or "dogs are pets".

I mean.... people give no thought to eating a chicken. But if anyone served "dog meat" I'm sure a log of people wouldn't eat it!

Why are chickens just "food" and "machines"? And dogs and cats are "pets" and "companions", etc.

Give me your ideas

Personally, I don't really understand why. I've just accepted that it's a hangup many people have.

I grew up raising rabbits for meat.
Rabbits are an interesting case, because some people view them only as pets, while others view them as meat.

Personally, I think it's good for any animal to be considered edible, because you can more easily breed a healthy, well-tempered pet population if you eat the culls. No trouble with trying to find them ALL pet homes. Rabbit bites me? Eat it. Rabbit the less-popular color? Eat it too. Rabbit with a minor injury? Eat it. After a while you end up with easy-care, good-tempered animals with whatever colors and other traits you were trying to achieve.

I've never eaten a dog or cat, partly because I know how that is viewed in my country (USA.) If it was socially acceptable to eat them, I would be much more likely to own them. For any animal I might own, I like to have a backup plan if things do not work out. Humanely kill it and eat it for dinner makes a great backup plan for chickens, rabbits, etc.

(Yes, people are different. If I have a child, I am responsible for that child even if things don't "work out" well. But I do not grant that same status in my household to any non-human animal. For me, that's where the dividing line falls.)

This was a debate me and my family had but monkeys instead. They say they couldn't because they're built like people.

I said meat is meat is meat

My friend shot a black bear once. When he skinned it he said it looked exactly as he imagined a short fat man would look skinned and hanging in a tree. He never hunted black bear again. Some people have and will starve to death rather than eat “strange” food.

I agree and that last paragraph cracked me up. If One of our animals (maybe not the horses because they're more pets) is mean, it's eaten. We had a rabbit named Angel. Her 12 week birthday resulted in a big dinner because she was the meanest rabbit I have ever known
