Chickens got a rat!

This last summer I gave my chickens a snake I found. That was good humor! One would grab it and run one way with all the others in tow. Then it was just long enough that they's trip and fall and drop the snake and another would grab it and run the other way with all the others in tow again. I truely almost peed my pants watching this. It went on for almost a half an hour.

They LOVE new toys! Especially the eatable kind!

Chickens are kinda like Land Sharks

I am impressed by the size of that rat...excellent kill skills for 10 month old chickens.

One solid week of continuous rain just started, so maybe more rodents will try to grab some free layer pellets and end up BEING the main course

Love your snake story Fordmommy.

We found a baby mouse in the house and were not sure what to do with it. My teenager decided throwing it in the chicken coop would be interesting....and the poor mouse lived a mere second or two before the chickens had savagely ripped it to shreds. It was disgusting! The kind of thing a teenage boy really enjoys!

We have a cat that likes to bring us his prizes to show what a good hunter he is. If they are fresh (or it is frozen out) my hubby has been tossing them to the chickens (after hearing the baby mouse story). Also gross, but why waste the protein? The chickens seem to think it was the finest of treats. I try not to watch and would rather watch mine eating grapes, that is pretty funny too.

I'd put my chickens up against a rat any day of the week. Couple of days ago my cat came streaking around a corner on it's side (like a motorcycle)
digging in with all four legs trying to get away from Big Red, my RIR on steriods with attitude. Next day my beagle decided to walk down in the midst
of the hens and lay down on her back to wallow (probably in poop). I heard a racket and 6 hens were all over that dog. They must have just been
giving her a warning, didn't bring any blood, but she slunk off with her tail between her legs - some dog - bested by chickens.

Extra protein was a big hit, today was our first 2 egg day!

We have three (9 month old) pullets with one girl laying an egg almost everyday (Dominique is my favorite and the Roo's too). while the other two have been just freeloading. Ricky is a full time freeloader too, but he manages the flock very well.

FINALLY...they have reached pullet maturity

and now it looks like all three are laying!!! I'm going to start feeding a higher protein diet and watch the eggs roll in...
