Thank you for the idea! We are planning our new coop now and these are just the thing. Right now our local Home Depot has the 5 gal. buckets in pretty pastel colors that I think the girls will really enjoy!

I love this idea, and don't know why I didn't think of it. I now know what to use all the buckets left over from cat litter for-----I had been trying to recycle them by using them as water bucets already. Thanks for posting this! (Right now I have 4 crates and 2 dresser drawers I use for nest boxes).

So, silly question. Maybe.

How do you reinforce the lid that is cut along the bottom? If a chicken tried to roost or stepped on it wrong, I'd think that it would pop off? Maybe I missed something in the previous posts about this. Thanks!

We used a strip of 1x2 and screwed that into the lid then filed down the plastic so it wasn't sharp. It seems to do the trick very well. I have heavy breeds and they perch on them all the time.

Awesome! Just what I needed! Hubby made a nest box for our BA that we got the weekend after she disapproved of our cardboard box idea. Except the thing is HEAVY- made from 8 ply plywood and impossible to mount on our movable pen so the bucket idea is super! Did you glue the lid on with something specific?
