One is a "Red Star" and the other is a Commercial Rhode Island Red type (red laying hen). But both are purely commerical laying hens.
They were purchased from a "free run" farm operation after they were 1 year old. They have done very well, but it took them a while to become chickens again and grow all their feathers back.
All in all a very very satisfying experience. The red star we have had for well over a year and has not moulted yet. The other has moulted once but in 1.5 years both have continued to lay 5 to 6 eggs a week.
Noisy Nancy. RIP - was also part of this batch and had bantam qualities -but was killed by the neighbours dog digging under our fence during a workday. She was a very funny hen and a good layer.
I will be attending the city hall meeting to consider backyard hens for Pitt Meadows, in May 2014. I will be there in an advisory position to answer questions for other tax payers.
If anyone has a nice concise guide to backyard chickens -pro's and con's - this would be of some assistance to me in trying to legalise hens in our city.
Cheers
