After FIVE years of asking, my son and daughter finally got their wish: Chickens! All smiles here, five chicks in my dining room, and now we're really on the clock! (no coop yet!)

DS wants to help Mom build the coop FROM SCRATCH (eek!) OK... I'm no neophyte when it comes to power tools, but between the chick-induced timeline and the undependable weather (and the fact that DS can only help on weekends) I'm starting to feel a bit pressed for time (and $$) so I'm looking on the Seattle Craigslist for materials or structures we can use.

We have friends who keep chickens and have been asking them for advice and now we're on BackyardChickens too. (Yay!) SO excited to be joining the flock -- Wish us luck! :)

Hey there! I recently got a bunch of good scrap wood by posting on craigslist something the the effect of, "has your spouse been asking you to get rid of your pile of scrap/project wood? I'm making a chicken coop and would like to re-purpose as much material as possible. " then I listed what I was interested in: lumber, plywood, siding, cinder blocks... A few people contacted me within a few days with materials and/or ideas. I got a bunch of weird pieces that will make good walls and floors for free when using some creativity. I hope to get it upright in the next couple weeks. :) also check out places like habitat for humanity's store or other recycling places. Best of luck to you
