Chickens in town, or Urban Farming

So how many eggs do you usually get from your 5 city chicks? I was thinking 5 is a good number, but it might be too many eggs! Worst case scenario I can give them away.

I have 4 BO laying, and 1 bantam mix. I get between 3-5 eggs a day. I have plenty of eggs for us, and some to give away.

I live in city limits too on 1/4 acre lot with neighbors. We have 7 chickens. I'm supposed to have a permit for my chickens but never got it. All the neighbors enjoy hearing the chickens (we have a rooster too) and we share lots of eggs. Someone posted that you might want to think of a compost bin. I would agree. Lots of poop when you have chickens! Good luck and have fun!

when i just fed favorite cockatiel food, and let forage, i had no odor or poop troubles, and still getting same amount of eggs, but with maybe feeding to many layer pellets, one hen makes in a day, the odor and poop of a lot in a week.

I would imagine it's the same with the chickens as it is with dogs... dogs fed a corn base store bought kibble poop a heck of a lot more than a dog fed the BARF or RAW diet. So a chicken that eats "whole" foods will process it and use more of it than broken down manufactured foods, thus affecting the poop load. In theory anyways, I haven't tried it. My girls are fed a layer crumble as the main feed and some free range/kitchen scraps added. My bantam flock didn't produce this much poo, not by a long shot... and they were predominantly free range with some cracked corn thrown at them in the morning. Huh. Food for thought.

I live in town and I am allowed up to 15 chickens this includes a rooster I get about a dozen eggs every 2 days sometimes more. I love having chickens I use their poop and nesting stuff for the garden so I get lots of extra veggies from that. I can't wait until we get our farm so we can add ducks and turkeys.

I have chickens in the city as well. 12 to 15 chickens was a bit much for me but gladly they were here short term. Up to six to eight chickens per family of four would suffice.

There are just the 2 of us, and we have quite a few chickens now with chicks, bators, brooders, etc.; but of the actual laying hens in the backyard, we have 6. We get 3 to 6 eggs a day from the 6 girls (though we haven't had any eggs from Olga since she went broody a month ago). We give away about a dozen eggs a week, and we just sold our first dozen for $3 about a week ago. We live in the city. Well, our house is *officially* outside the city limits by about 20 yards, but we are in a well-populated neighborhood. For just you and your fiance, three chicks should do you just fine, as long as they all turn out to be girls!

You said you wanted to get some bantams... what breed of bantams are you thinking about? I, too, recently discovered bantams. They wrap their little wings around your little heart & then you're done for.

As Sheriff Buford T. Justice said, "What we're dealing with here is a complete lack of respect for the law." (In some of the cases.)

hey. i explained that i looked up all the technical and loopholes of the laws, and my cop friends and neighbors think my chickens are fun. havent heard anything from the manager or owner of my building and complex yet though, but been over a couple monthes, so kinda fine i guess, unless someone is suddenly upset by the crowing my my roosters over the neighbors farm roosters and horses fighting across the property line.

I really don't know! Probably one with feathered feet and egg laying ability. D'uccles and Mille Fleurs are so pretty!
