Chickens In Ya Window

My two grown roos are in a 14 x 24 coop with the hens, only a small outdoor run so they have to live nicely together.  And they do.  The alpha roo owns the place, the other is busy when big guy's back is turned, which is why I get some really nice EE mixes.

I hope I can keep them together. The black and the blue are the top dogs, but the girls lay down with the splash. He's a handsome boy

As the hormones kick in they may have some fights, but as long as the dynamics don't change drastically they should get past it and the second string will accept his position and keep his distance. My non-dominant will not remain within 10 feet of the big guy. A 7 pound roo can be invisible if he wishes to be. They haven't fought since they were about 5 months old.

My non-dominant roo knows that Big Guy is the boss, but he will still try to get on a hen every chance he gets. Big Guy will come running if he catches him. But they both do it, when they see the other guy on one of the girls. I actually noticed a red, bare patch at the base of Big Guy's tail Saturday, but I can't catch him. When DH grabbed Punkin though, we felt just how sharp his spurs are now, and I think he is catching Big Guy on the saddle, when he runs him off a hen. I'm torn because I don't want them to hurt each other, but they normally work really well together, keeping the hens rounded up and such. With them free-ranging on their own, they roam probably 4-5 acres throughout the day, and a hen or two will linger sometimes when the group moves, but Punkin will usually stay with them, so I hate to get rid of one of the boys. :/

Pop his spurs off then... you can twist them off with pliers or use a dremel and grind them down...

I was young but never stupid . Watched to many friends mess up their lives . and new I didn't want any part of that. now that's not saying I didn't party after all I grew up in the 60s and 70s.

maybe I didn't party enough. now I'm rethinking my life . chickens have driven me nuts. here's one for you WV and Sidewing .walked down to my old tractor shed this morning looked in the field I cut Sunday for hay . not more than a hundred feet from me were two bucks . one looked to be at least to be a six pointer and the other a spike. both good size . and you poor guys go and climb trees . I just cut the hay and they come to me .

I was thinking of our hunters yesterday, too. DH and I took a drive up in the Jemez mountains and saw a rafter of turkeys near the road. There was 6-8 of them meandering up a hillside. We just stopped and watched them for a while, they were so pretty. Merriam's turkeys, I think.

Got wild turkeys too. they come to the driveway in the spring to mate . guess they like it here .
