My coop is about 4' high. All of my girls (except my silkies) roost in the rafters which are 2x4s- 2" side up. They seem to have no problem balancing or getting up there as I have different branches (intended for them to roost on) at different levels providing a "ladder". I have read that the square 2" side isn't the best, but it's what they prefer. Any suggestions?

They usually get where they want in my opinion. I have a few that roost in my Windows up against the wire on 2x4 flat side. On the opposite side from the roost with other chickens.

I think the flat side up is more for cold winters so they can cover their feet with their feathers. In warmer weather it won't make much difference. If they like it, you are good to go!

Most breeds will roost as high as they are able. Its an old defense strategy to keep from being eaten by predators when they sleep. I've used 2x4s "roosting on the 2'' side" for roosts for decades seems to be the right size for large breeds.

Welcome to BYC!

The size or squareness of roost doesn't really matter....being able to get down without crashing into something in a small coop is most important IMO.
As well as whether maybe freezing drafts might hit them up that high in the winter, depending on where in NC you are and how your ventilation is set up.
And last, but not least for some, is if this is interfering with your night poop management scheme.
