Chickens were killed by neighbors dog...question *UPDATE*

I'm so sorry! I'm very glad that your neighbor is willing to pay something. Have you considered ordering some of the started pullets from somewhere like McMurray Hatcheries? They have a couple of different kinds and they are about 20 weeks and already laying. They may not have the breeds you want, but I think that they run about $15 a piece. It might be worth looking into so you do not loose the eggs that were just around the corner from yours. While those are laying you could raise some chicks of the breed of your choosing & cull the others when the chicks start laying. I think that is what I would do.....

I am sad to hear about your loss. I would charge $15 to $20 each for standard layers. If you had show quality, i would charge alot more.

I get calls from the feed store for folks looking for replacement birds (predator loss) if they are point of lay hens I charge $20. Younger ones not laying are $15. If you can get more since you fed them to this age ask for that as well. Ten birds is a lot to loose and now starting over is a large project. Not something you can just stop somewhere and buy off the shelf. If you had purebreds its harder.

So sorry you had to loose birds this way. My neighbor also has a small dog that visited and tried to do damage. We talked and they installed a wireless fence and in turn since my girls are teasers I put up hot wire at chicken level to keep them from going to her yard.

Do not buy off of Craigslist, you cannot be sure of that you will get..... healthwise etc......

Also if the dog got in to your pen, then please spend the money on hardware cloth around the lower 24" with 12 inches buried into the soil. Check your local laws, and if you don't have a gun get one. If the law allows shootto kill, the dog will return if it has the chance as it has now gotten a taste.

Let the neighbor pay, once you have the cash inform them that you will shoot next time, or expect them to take care of the matter. Be friendly but firm over the situation and their responsibility not just to you but others around you.

Egg laying pets $20 per bird, any damage to property, the cost of the hatching eggs and total it up and take no less. I am so sorry for your loss.

So, the dog's owner came by on Monday to pay us the hens lost. I asked for $20 a hen plus the money for the hatching eggs he didn't question it. He felt bad and apologized sincerely. They have only had the dog for a week, and he said if they couldn't keep him contained they would return him the rescue. They live about 1/2 mile from us. Our next door neighbor told us that another neighbors dogs were coming over when we werent home and were harassing the chickens. Animal control told me that the fine for breaking the leash law is $200 per dog per account. They have 2 dogs and do NOT have the money to bail them out if they got picked up. Even though we don't currently have hens I plan on calling animal control if I see them out of their yard. I am so tired of people being irresponsible about their dogs. If they really cared about their dogs they wouldnt let them run loose. Drives me nuts!! My dogs have never gotten loose but if they did, I would drop everything and get them back! We are hoping to move soon, so hopefully we won't have to deal this for too much longer!

I'm glad the dog's owner paid up, but that doesn't replace the poor little girls you lost. I have some girls that are almost 2yrs old that Im going to replace with new ones, but would sell a few instead of chicken stew. Where are u at? I'm in Indiana. Maybe post your location on your thread and some of us can help replace your girls.

We are in the eastern panhandle of WV (Harpers Ferry). We will be going to the local Chickenstock on the 9th. That is where we got the ones we lost. We still need to proof the run a bit better before we put any new hens in it.
