Chickens who HATE snow?

Yes, everything we do for our pet chickens is worth it. Whenever winter ends we will do whatever needed so or girlz (Cicken for hens) are comfortable.
Last summer they had a pool and 2 electric fans plus ice chips whenever I got a cold drink.:lau

Wow!! That's what mine do. I've covered their coop so they can use the run, but the temps here in January broke records from over 100 years ago (I live in NYC - Brooklyn to be exact) so I took them inside into the basement to the "emergency shelter". They HATE that shelter, but when I went to put them back outside the poop hit the fan. They wriggled, wiggled, sqawked, screamed, whined.........you get me. Then they ran back into the back door, flew/tripped/slid back into the basement and gave me Team Super Stink Eye.

Days later the snow disappeared in most of my yard and they came out to peck around. Nope - too cold. I had left my back door open for my dog and he AND the chickens ran in and took over my kitchen. Sheesh!! I hate the cold too, but come on. LOL.

I'm glad I found this thread, as I was concerned if they were being spoiled city birds, but it seems from this thread that mine are normal. I feel so bad. My chickens, feral cats and my dog are miserable during this long winter. I am too - I hate it. Last weekend it warmed up (to 51 degrees!!) and the chooks were out and about alllll day Saturday. They barely made it to the coop for night time. LOL.

Now, it's cold again - so it's out to free range (for about 10 seconds) then into the coop or my kitchen, whichever is closest. LOL.

So funny, I had an extensive negotiation with my husband about giving my chickens access to the garage. It started out that he was ok with it when the temperatures were consistently below 0, even in the daytime. The garage isn't heated or anything, but a little more protected from the wind than their run. Then, spoiled girls that they are, they started making a run for the garage as soon as I opened their coop in the morning, even if it was in the teens and sunny, especially if it was snowing. And then of course, once we started having a big slushy melt, they declared that they needed to be in the garage rather than in the freezing mud bog of a run.

Long story short, they have completely taken over the garage, and everything is going to have to get dragged out and scrubbed down this spring.

But even my husband has developed a soft spot for "the girls," and he's willing to overlook the frozen poop, straw, and scratch to know that they are safe and protected.

On the morning right after a snowfall, our birds don't venture out willingly. But with incentives they will, as long as they don't sink into the snow. Dustings are no big deal. In this pic, several inches of sleet had hardened into almost a glacier, but a little snow on top made it OK for getting traction.

We've been having really warm weather, up to 78 degrees the other day, which is really weird. So last night it got down to 21 degrees and we woke up to about 1.5" of snow. The chickens, who previously were wandering out in the snow have decided they're not even going to leave the coop. Not even to go down the ramp under the house where there's no snow. They're just going to deny there is a world beyond the walls. The poor duck - who will be getting friends in about 2 weeks - who loves to wander even in snow and will try to take a bath on her iced-over pool - is just beside herself wanting to wander around and forage, but having no one to go with her.

Poor things, I understand. We finially have good weather and I put the girls outside. They are still n the box inside since the coop flooded.
Bertha comes to the back door to be put in the box to lay her egg.
But, sympathies with the snow. Mine would rather walk in the mud outside than in snow. Will wait for rescue so as not to walk in snow.
They just don't understand, I have tried to explain it.
