I wonder what's going on with them. It's not even that cold yet! I don't heat my coops and have never lost one to the cold. Only time I considered adding a heat lamp was several years ago when I only had 3 hens and it got to -16.

sorry to hear about your problems darlene and shay. that photo is unbelieveable. I mostly do not heat and do not have problems. I only turn on a brooder lite a couple feet off the floor when it is bitterly cold in the middle of winter. the big thing is to keep them dry and out of drafts. I too believe that if you heat and the power goes out your losses will be great.

and on a good note, darlene I felt like you yesterday. I got a bunny.

not cold yet? i wish, all the waters are frozen in the mornings here.
jose is out there building small coops in the big coop so i get some of the birds inside away from drafts.
i really dont want to do the heat becouse it throws off there abililty to immune and adapt to the regular weather.
my other polish are perfect and in more open drafts and nothing has happened to them at all, they look great, maybe i have few weak birds that cant handle the weather?

the weak thing is what I was thinking. I think the first really cold nights are mother natures way of culling the weak.

I do still have a couple.
Keep your hens from drafts and from getting wet, my egg layers i have not had any promblems with, and the come out during the day and go back in to roost at night. Just make sure yours go back in at night out of drafts.

Sorry to hear about your roo Darleen...

Kathy, it was the little roo I got from you last spring! He stayed so small, definitley a class A and he was such a good little roo to his serama gals! I am so tired of these darn hawks. They have made such a comeback in numbers, they are all I see everywhere. Yesterday on my way down to Mass. I counted one every 50 yards down the median strip on route 3.

Oh! Take some pics. I hope the long legged one turns out to be a modern! Is it black by any chance? If so then it probably is! I am looking for a few blue modern pullets or hens if you come across any. I hae a blue roo and need some ladies for him. Also a few splash girls.
