Hi, Mark.
we will be doing heat in our big coop, but they also wont be free ranging to, mark is right though, if you have heated coop keep th ebirds cooped in, becouse if they free rang, from heated out to below or 20, that can hurt there immune system and weakin it.
so far no heat on any one, and i lost 1 silkie adult the other day.
i lost 3 oegb,
my silkies and d'uccle will be cooped in for the winter, they are in the big coop with soon to be heated.

my polish last year did great with no heat, and my frizzle and cochin bantams too.
but this year becouse i want to pay more attion on my showing, i am bring in and cooping my Potenal SQ inside the bigger coop with heat becouse i dont want issues to frost bite. and my cochins will have a light in there coop to keep the temp at a normal that frost bite and freezing water wont accure.
egg layers just a light on there water, ducks ( this is my first year of winter with adults ducks and geese) and Tipy yesterday my double crested duck was not doing so well at all, so he and the rest of the ducks i took out of the geese pen put them in a seperated pen and coop them in another smaller coop with no wind getting in, i think they will be fine.

your right,
but last year i still has promblems with frost bite on a few of my birds, with the ones that had no heat, even though they were not heated and had a place to go into and locked up at night, i also used vasiline on ther feet and combs and wattles, so the ones i am useing for show will be spoiled and yep closely watched in case of power.
i lost 1 silkie adult last night and there were closed in , but last rear we did not lose any and they were closed in with a light heater.

If they still got frost bite, their perch is not big enough. The perch needs to be big enough for them to wrap their feet so when they sit down on them it covers their toes.I use a 2x4 ,lay it flat. It's best to use a branch at least 4" round, but a 2x4 works good.

we are thinking about the heat thing, becouse you are right, i am just so afraid becouse i already lost 3 oegb's. and a silkie. then again he does still have to close up some drafty areas in there.
maybe i will give it a shot, fix all there roosts.

hey 6 so far now! and still more piiping even 1 egg i put in from ee crosses,
so far i know 2 are clean leggged, i will take pics in a bit, they are so small like oegb or seramas.

There is the serama roo out there and he is a class A, but I am trying to think who the mom could be? Are the legs long like the modern games because I have that hen that was laying when I got her but she has since stopped. I am aslo having a hard time with one of those OEGB's we got. She is just sitting all puffed up and is very weak. I noticed the 3 of them would not go out of the coop ever and I am wondering if she did not eat enough even though I was putting feed in the coop. Today was the first time when I let everyone out that 2 of them actually ran out and ate, but she stayed in . I also noticed their beaks need to be trimmed so I am going back out witht he clippers to trim beaks.

i would put food in front of her seperated off, that way you can see if she is eating and if someone was tsopping her from eating, make sure her legs and feet are not freezing, i know that when birds get weak, they can get from anything not eating the cold makes it worse for them.

So I look out my window and did not see any of my chickens out in their pen, then I see this large bird that I know is not a chicken ready to walk into the coop thru the small door. I ran down into the yard and for sure it is a huge red tail hawk! I called my brother in law to come help me coax him out because the top of the run has strong deer netting stretched across the entire top and is secured with zip ties. I also grabbed my camera in case I have to end up documenting a "problematic hawk" because he is always trying to get in there after them and has killed a lot of my free range birds. Then I see he has already killed and ate my tiny serama roo! He kept flying back and forth trying to get out the way he must have gotten in but would only end up getting caught up in the netting upside down. My brother in law got here and as we were planning on opening up some of the netting to get him out, he all of a sudden made a rush at the upper corner and got out! Hopefully he will have had his full of the close encounter witht he giant humans and not come back soon! Here is a picture of him when he got caught in the netting before he flew to the other side of the pen. I actually video taped him just before he got out but am not sure if you can post video to a thread.

darlene, the chicks are soooo cute.
they are all clean legged, 3 look like and look like they will have beards, and 1 looks the color of a gold laced maeybe, one does look like it will have tall legs, and one has wicked short legs.
i will try to get some pics tomorow.

well i decided heated coop here you come!
Like Tony said though i will be watching it very close to make sure it does not go out.

Hubby found one of our Gold laced polish roo leaning down, he picked him up and his legs are like ice! he is in teh bathroom now and eating and drinking and perking back up little by little.i think this winter is going to be a very bad one. i did heer on th enews a few weeks ago that they are predicting this winter to be the coldest in 100 years!
