Don't beat yourself up about it Darlene. Usually by the time they're showing significant symptoms it's too late anyway. I don't think anything you did killed her.

Thanks Cindy! I hope you are right and you probably are becasue i gave about 25 birds shots and she was the only one that died after. But she seemd to be getting better, but maybe that was wishful thinking on my part. I just hope the rest pull thru this mess!

some birds can also get stressed from the handling. being sick could have just been the start of it all!

if you aren't already feeding them cracked corn i would do so along with some veggies to offset that possibly salty feed.

Just found my sweet Millie, lying under the perch. No signs of trauma. Guess she just died. My 1st chicken.

I'll miss you my sweet favorite girl.

It is npot my birds that are eating the salty feed, I posted that as a courtesy for others to see the issue my friend was having with birds dying and not gaining weight. SOme of the members here were also stating the same thing with the weight issue, so I asked a very experienced breeder friend what was happening and he is the one that had the feed issue. My birds do get cracked corn, wild bird seed and table extras in addition to breads (as a treat only) and their regular pellets or crumbles. The issue I have been having is with respiratory. But I must say that today, that second tylan injection is showing it's results. The only symptom left on a few birds is the eyes crusted shut, so I did the neosporin on them and they opened right up. Hopefully this will not relapse, it was pitiful and I feel bad that I did not find out to do the tylan injections sooner. I lost some nice birds to it.

I also lost my little frizzle cochin today. She was doing so much better the last couple of days. I thought she was going to make it but she was very weak this morning. She tried so hard and loved to talk back to me like she was saying she understood everything I said.
R.I.P. LITTLE ONE.

I'm so sorry to read about all the problems Darleen's been having lately, plus other people losing birds too.

It's hard i know. Always seems to be the favorites too. We lost our favorite Serama pullet just before Christmas. A month before, i found her huddled in a heap. Couldn't find anything visibly wrong, but brough her inside to try nursing her to health again. No visible symptoms, other than lethargy i guess you'd call it. She was eating and drinking ok, and then seemed to pull out of whatever it was. By then we got some very cold (single digit) temps, so i hesitated to try putting her back out in the chicken tractor. So we kept her in and gave her extra attention, and she'd sit on our shoulder and chirp to us. Then she started going downhill again---and then she was having some sort of convulsions (I don't know how else to describe it). I gave her vitamins, but she stopped eating and drinking entirely. She kept having convulsions, and i'd wake up at night hearing her thrash around her cage.

When she wasn't convulsing, she would sit in a huddle with her eyes shut, but NO other symptoms. She finally passed away. i'm completely baffled. I can't find any chicken illness that fits, and no one else is acting like that (fortunately).

My Serama babies are doing famously---the ones that hatched in early December! i'm raising them in the house. They are so cute, they love to sleep on top of the stuffed chick i put with them for cuddling. They also like to crowd together in a little heap to sleep all entwined together! I got all different colors this time, different from the last hatch in September. The kids love to play with them, so they are getting used to being held. Everyone should have some Seramas! They make such awesome pets!

Sorry howardacres about your loss. I am hoping to get some seramas and quail this spring. Hopefully some Millies to go with them.
I don't know what caused her demise. She was the sweetest little girl that loved to peep everytime I talked to her. Now I am down to only eight chickens and three of them are roos. I have had to cut down on chickens due to my stroke in September so I chose to stay with the smaller chickens except for two EE's.
