Did you get the seeds in? I'm going to Westford Sunday, but won't make it in June. I can't get to Milford this Saturday.

I did and you got a PM.

This is great to know, nankins are so cute.
I work closely with rare and endangered birds and rabbits so I have to say thank you for choosing a rare breed. I love the idea of a living museum. I didnt know thre was any still around.

Gore Estate is where I saw them first that got me into the idea of hatching Nankin eggs. I am very pleased with the resulting birds but since I can't have roosters here (not supposed to anyway) I can't keep the pair and I hate for them to not be where they can be contributing to the growing gene pool

I have them on BYC auction:

oh ok, lol

I have no idea why but the name sounded like a duck to me too

.....I googled it haha.

LOL! Well you know what they say. If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck... But, it doesn't because it's a chicken!

Nankins originally were from Malaysia I think, but were imported into China and other places and eventually to England. They were brought to America in the 1700s. Not many people have them anymore, and the standards for the breed vary between countries. They can be single- or rose comb, have dark slate, light slate or white legs and shanks, and while the roos should have a rich red-chestnut color, the hens can be chestnut to soft blonde-tan. They are about the same size as an OEG bantam. My flock is single-comb and the hens range in color from chestnut to blonde with light slate to white legs, the roos are all the red-chestnut with slate legs.

They are also really great keepers, good natured and get used to handling. They also have "wild ancestor" traits such as the roo taking over caring for a brood of chicks so the hen can start a new clutch of eggs. So cool! I love 'em!

The birds I'll have ready for the swap are all healthy, have good form, make great pets but will not be SQ. The one trait I have to occasionally weed out is black ticking/lacing on the hens' body feathers. I've been raising Nankins for 7 years but don't have the heart to "cull" (euthanize) the off-color birds.

The birds I bring to the swap will likely have ticking, but with selective breeding you can get clean coloring.

Was someone looking for keets?

I will have a few ready for Shay's next swap.

I have 30 coming, giving a few to a girlfriend, but I think I am only going to keep 12 or 15. They are assorted, so I am going to keep the colors I want.

When I get them I will let you know what colors I have.

Yes, I have a friend looking for some. Let me know the price (post or PM) and I will see how many she would be interested in. Thanks!

The color varieties will be hatchery choice but they guarantee at least three different kinds from this group: Pearl, White, Lavender, Purple, Coral Blue, Buff, Buff Dundotte, Porcelain, Opaline, Slate, Chocolate, Powder Blue, and Brown.

Course I am hoping for more than just three and some really fun colors but we shall see.

I also will have about 20 st. run Muscovy ducklings of different color assortments coming in either June or July for sale. If anyone would like to reserve some now.

If interested I can give you prices and such, just PM me
