HI! I am new here and looking to raise chickens for eggs. I have a partially underground horse barn (stays above 20 degrees all winter) and I am in the process of knocking out a wall between two stalls and making it into a coop. There is also an attached outdoor ring that I am fencing and putting a net over.

My question is: Should I order/buy chicks to raise or should I get some a few weeks old already? I am interested in attending the swap, but it is about 1 1/2 hrs from me. The chickens I would like to have are Barred Rocks and Black or Red Stars. Will anyone have these chicks available at the swap?

Thanks,
Katrina

Any idea if Tom will come? He always has a bunch of layers, all different ages.

Hi,

Hope this is ok to post on your thread Shay as I couldn't figure out where else to post it.

I am seriously considering pre-ordering some black copper marans and birchen marans chicks from Greenfire farms for delivery in April 2011. These folks are the people that have Bev Davis marans now. http://greenfirefarms.com/ I have wanted some of these birds for years and recently contacted Bev about ordering some and she sent me to Greenfire Farms. They have a 10 chick minimum and do not sex chicks but I only want 2-3 hens. They are costly, but I'm sure well worth the money.

If you are within an hour of Shay's place in Townsend, MA (or are willing to travel to this area) and are interested in sharing an order of chicks with me please PM or email me for prices etc. I'll probably only place the pre-paid order to PayPal if I have at least one person to share with (also prepaid to me via PayPal). I would ask the price per chick that they are charging me (which is a greatly discounted rate from their website) plus an equal amount per chick for the shipping costs. I'm not looking to make money, i just want to pay for the chicks I keep. I'd be happy to FW copies of my email communications with both Bev Davis and Greenfire Farms to interested parties only.

This would be ideal for someone who is seriously interested in breeding these birds. At this point, I'm personally only interested in 2-3 hens but in the future I might be interested in buying both male and female chicks back from the person sharing this order.

I'm not interested in BCM but I can tell you I was quite happy with my dealings with Paul Bradshaw. I got some Sussex from him last year.

Had you considered getting a juvie trio and selling the cockerel?
