Chickentrain's Dog Q&A

I think that if I had more time in my day I'd be interested in obedience or rally training. As it stands, I'll have to get a LOT better at time management on weekdays if I want to be able to train on them for any significant amounts of time

I work on Obedience less than once a week and my dog still remembers it all, you just wont progress as fast :)

you are welcome

I'd never ever hurt my dog, or put him through any sort of emotional trauma.

that being said, I feel 100% safe using the e-collar and knowing it doesn't hurt, it just tightens his muscles, its only meant to an extension of my arm. Its not a shock, its not a punishment.
Plus some dogs only need the beep and not even the shock or vibrate part after the first time or two

yep! I agree

when your dog is on the leash, your dog is close enough to you that you can poke it to get its attention, communicate through the leash, or wave a treat in front of their face

when they are off leash running away from you, the e-collar acts as all of the above while you can't physcially reach your dog

Yeah exactly! And the beep is basically just a warning which is all most dogs need.

I guess if you didn’t like e collars you could just use a long line until recall was totally reliable which I’ve done but e collars are super easy too and don’t hurt or traumatize them unless maybe you zap them on 100 repeatedly or something hahah but you do have to train it and go through the program and teach them how to be able to “turn off” the pressure themselves etc. You don’t just slap it on and crank it up when they don’t listen. It’s a process. And if they’re not listening then something went wrong in that process and/or they are not ready for that level of distraction yet. And most dogs can be trained. Even ones that are supposedly barky or run away or whatever. Just have to work at it and teach them your expectations. They were bred as watch dogs so yes, can be a bit barky, but should at the very least learn to stop on command.

As it stands, I have Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and potentially Wednesdays available
My parents will also be doing some basic stuff like sit, come, and basic leash training, which leaves me free to work on more advanced stuff like heeling, etc.
