My chicks are 4 weeks. They have ample room for the 10 of them but today they decided to peck the 2 cochin chicks (mixed breeds...all standard) until they are bleeding (one is our smallest chick and she has a lot of blood near the tail and the other just a little along the back where his feathers are coming in). I put each in an old birdcage so now they are segregated from each other and the rest (which is making them cry). What can I do to stop this? How long to I keep them apart? Anything I can put on the wounds?...I have styptic powder for dogs...does that work on chickens?

Are you using a brooder lamp, and if so, what color? Red brooder lamps ( usually 250 watts, but some from Premier 1 can be found at 125 watts) really are nice, but usually too warm for them. The red lights are calming, let the chicks sleep at night, and help to prevent pecking. When we still could get red incandescent 25 and 60 watt bulbs a few years ago, those were good to use.

Can you use some screen material or netting to just separate the bullies or the hurt ones? BluKote spray or gentian violet are good to cover the red wounds to help prevent more pecking. They are starting to establish their pecking order, so they all need to be together soon.

We are using a radient heater not a bulb but I did have a nightlight in there just to help me when I check on them...maybe I will take that out. Will look for BlueKote...thanks!
