Chicks dropping dead!

Okay I just re-read and see you said their poop was okay looking. Still, have you checked for pasting up? Using a heat light can make that happen more than not using one.

Just another thought- did you have them in an old box or container that maybe making them sick? Just trying to think of everything.

ONE MORE thing I thought of... You should completely clean and rinse, rinse, rinse out their water dispenser. COuld be something in there making them sick. Seeing as all of them seem to be "catching" it, I would think virus or water source.

Are you sure they are warm enough? If the room is 65, you need a pretty good temperature increase to get to 90-95. Have you ruled out a draft? Even if a portion of the brooder is registering a 90-95 degree temp on the thermometer, a draft from a 65 degree basement can take the felt temperature (wind chill) down quite a bit. Since the brooder is in a basement, are you sure the temp stays at 65 at night? It could be dropping significantly lower at night. If you don't adjust the light for that temperature dip, they may be getting too cold. Are they able to get to the warm area? If you have feeders or other items blocking the way, very young chicks may not be able to figure out how to get where they want to go. Usually that is a concern for only the first few days.

That's all I can think of that hasn't already been addressed. If you have ruled out any causes over which you have control, you may want to contact Ideal about replacement chicks.

Good luck and let us know how things end up.

and there container we keep them in are brand new too never ever been used.....

I got Coccidiosis from Ideal one year... That is a good guess... treat them immediatly and use some Tetracyline in the water also at the same time as the Sulmet. It may save the bulk of them. Blood isn't always present in a Cocci outburst in fact it is very common for it not to have blood at all. Recovery is quick if this is the problem and switch them to medicated feed and clean the litter.. that is how it is spread... no housing adlult birds and babies.. The illness will get you big birds

They were shipped right? How long was their trip? If 4 die out of 25, that is actually not that bad, especially if it was cold anywhere along the shipping route or if the shipping box was near the corner of the truck. If the other 21 out of 25 chicks are just fine, just give ideal a call and let them know how many didn't make it in the first few days and they will often credit your account. Chicks can just "fall over dead" especially after shipping within the first week of life.

Sorry to hear. I had 50 shipped from Cackle on Wednesday and 15 arrived DOA yesterday. This morning 4 more were dead. After talking with Cackle they were expecting a huge temperature drop to below 40 and they added extra straw and heat. Well they died from heat because the temps didn't drop. Actually got warmer and here in S.Eastern WI by my place it was 77 degrees.
