Hello,

This is my first post here, however I have been reading for the last couple of days and have learned a lot!

Anyhoo... I have two chicks at the moment. They are 9 days old. I think they are Rhode Island Reds. One morning I woke up to find droppings dried and stuck to one chicks bum! I have tried removing it, but it seems to hurt the chick as he squirms whenever I try and pull it off. I have even dipped him in warm water and tried massaging it off with a cotton swab. IT WON"T BUDGE!

So far nothing seems blocked, but I am a bit worried it might become blocked since it looks like it has gotten worse. Any tips for removing it?

Thanks!

See if you can snip it off, or coat it with olive oil to soften it. Whatever you do, dab some olive oil on that area so it helps keep stuff from sticking

After I read your post, I put some olive oil on it. I'll see if it helps.

Thanks

wow oil is a good idea! i had just been rinsing their butts in warm water and peeling the poo off.

Once I had a chick with that, I just kept working it off slowly with warm water (use a paper towel and I just dipped its bum in a cup of warm water and very gently just kept working it off. After it was all off I put some mineral oil on it to prevent any more from sticking. I amde sure to be extremely gentle as that area seems to be tender and chicks are just so fragile,.

What do you think about snipping the poop off? I have little toenail scissors I could use. Or do you think there is too much risk in cutting the chickie instead?

I candled the 12 RIR eggs I have in the incubator and most of them are looking good!

Hold the chick's bottom under warm water and gently clean ALL of it off, then rub vaseline, medicated A&D, or something with a petroleum baseand rub it all over the area--this helps future poo from sticking and then I just put them under the heat lamp to dry. Good luck!
