Chicks dying, they were shipped today

Stop crying and go get the Poultry-Nutri-Drench. You are not powerless and I am trying to help. These chicks are no different than a needy litter of puppies or kittens. It's all about warmth and sugar levels. You have the warmth. But without the sugar levels, it does no good. Their G.I. tract is compromised by stress. Poultry Nutri-Dench was made just for this. Gro-Gel was not. Surgar mixtures were not. Go back and read the Bovidr website. P N-D mainlines into the bloodstream. It does not need to be digested like all the other supplements. It is famed for bringing back needy neonates. Where do you live? You should be able to find a location near you which has it.

wish I had seen this sooner I may have saved a few. I've no experience with shipped chicks but thought I had read enough about what to do when they arrive...I wasn't prepared for them dying 4 days later.

thank you karen.

More than welcome. Stress is such a sneaky killer! We do everything right, plan everything, get the birds, worry over them.and then they die. Days later. We blame ourselves but many times it is nothing we did, it is stress, the silent killer.
I agree with you. the best plan is preventative. I raise all my chicks from hatch with PND in their water. http://www.bovidr.com/poultry.html They grow bigger, more robust. No sickness. I learned the hard way too, years ago with a litter of puppies. Lost multiple pups to environmental stress. Then found Pet Nutri-Drops by Bovidr. Stress is just something rarely talked about after we recieve our chicks. For the 1st week after they arrive we should treat them like they are still in transit. Still having travel stress whether they manifest it or not. Because by the tme we see it, it can be too late. Been there, done that, you have my empathy,
Best Success,
Karen

Thank you for the information, 3riverschick!

My chicks are due to arrive from Meyer on April 11, and I'm doing everything I can now to be prepared. I ordered Gro-Gel from Meyer when I placed the chick order, but it is clear that I want to get Nutri-Drench as well. I will start them by giving them each a drop of Nutri-Drench as I take them out of the shipping box, and I'll put it in the water as well. My question is whether I should forego the Gro-Gel altogether, or does each product offer something different?

It does sound like the chicks are getting to cold during travel. If hatcheries can offer shipments of fewer chicks and pack them to keep them safe/warm why don't they offer a different way to ship/package them during the cold weather? I know it usually cost more to have just a few chicks shipped but I personally would pay more during the cold months or cold snaps to have chicks arrive safely. Most hatcheries are good about refunding for the lost chicks but no one can refund for the time and energy spent trying to save the chicks. Plus, you usually order what you're wanting and even if you plan a couple of losses a refund doesn't get you where you want to be.

I am so sorry about your chicks. I received 17 from McMurray today and all are doing great. The Polish was acting a little funny. She fell over partly in the water, when I picked her up and layed her down she stretched out and acted like she was dying. I got some sugar water in her and after a few minutes she perked right up. I ordered the grogel but then read to add it to the food. I assumed it went in the water. I did use it though.

I hope the rest of you chicks do well.

Well I've lost a total of 9 chicks. I called MM and spoke at length with the customer rep and they were very kind and offered to replace the chicks. I thanked them and told them I had planned to order more but with the continued deaths I was worried about ordering shipped chicks again. Then this afternoon I receive an email order confirmation they are crediting me for the 9 plus 5 additional. I must say I was surprised and impressed. I had not expected that but I'm pleased that customer service is important to them also makes feel a lot better about ordering from them in the future. I know things happen and dealing with animals there are so many variables but they're willingness to work with me says a lot for their business.

You need Poultry Nutri-Drench. Can get it at Tractor Supply. Top quality emergency nutritional spplement. Excellent for travel stress. Doesn't need digesting so great for chilled animals. Goes straight into the bloodstream. Concentrated, The smallest bottle is all you need. Less than 10.00 . Put in water the 1st 2 weeks of life. Give each chick just one drop on arrival. I've used it on birds and collies (Pet Nutri-Drops) for years.
See their webpage and testimonal page. http://www.bovidr.com/ http://www.bovidr.com/poultry.html
The science techs at Bovidr are very knowledgeable and helpful.

WOW!! within about 15 minutes of administering a drop to all my Blue Andalusians, then placing some in the waterer for everyone else....I found all of them lined up at the feeder gobbling away. I've haven't seen them do that before. There would be a few here and there but not the whole group. Karen thank you. you were so right about this stuff!!
