Chicks dying

Remember that bird medicine ? The medicine in it is
ENROFLOXACIN
it's a broad spectrum antibiotic
"Baytril, a fluoroquinolone known generically as enrofloxacin, is the first veterinary drug to be banned because it leads to the emergence of resistant bacteria. It is chemically similar to the antibiotic Cipro, which is widely prescribed to treat food-borne illness in people. Use of Baytril in poultry, FDA says, reduces the effectiveness of Cipro in treating Campylobacter in humans."

It's a great drug and I still use it even though it's banned.

Lost the weakest one last night. Only 2 left out of 6. These 2 were the biggest of the bunch and seemingly doing better. Today they have slept most of the afternoon on the brooder floor and one is fairly more sluggish. Both have been eating (starter food) and drinking water mixed with corrid only. This is day 4 on corrid medicated water (changed daily if not twice daily). I noticed a couple of green bile poops and I don't know if either will make it. I really thought they would be doing much better by now.
Sorry for your loss...

Oh no. :( I'm hoping your other 2 pull through...

Lost all but one. It seems to be doing ok..eating drinking and pooping, but lonely now. I didn't know it would be this tough.

Darn! I never knew it was so common to lose chicks like this either. Everyone makes it sound like raising hens from chicks is super easy. I lost 2 of my 5, just laid down and died. Now a 3rd has a protruded vent and I am afraid I may have to cull her if she doesn't heal.

Heartbreaking.

Unfortunately, I couldn't agree more! Getting 2 chicks I thought was going to be a walk in the park. My employer raised 5 from 1 day up and they all were fine the entire time. I've been fighting to keep my two alive for 3 days now, and it's very stressful and a terrible experience. I don't think I'd get young chicks again.

Raising chicks is easy - if you read up on raising them before you get them - it takes a little effort but it is worth it - a lot of people get chciks or chickens and haven't prepared themselves with the required knowledge before hand - then when they have problems they are lost - often don't know what to do - there is enough information on this forum about chickens to become an expert - I notice that people ask the same questions time and time again even if the subject has been discussed a thousand time before - remember the old saying - gee - I forgot what it was - but it was very appropriate - have a good one - JoePa

Well the one left seems to be over the cocci and is eating and drinking well but now has an eye that is shut and wheezes a little when roosting. There is no foul odor. I suspect a respiratory infection. That is what I thought the first one had and was treating them all for that last weekend. I have started it on Duramycin-10. I'll post the results.

Sometimes it is easier to ask a question and get a quick answer from someone that has had a similar situation than it is to sift through pages and pages looking for a specific answer to a quickly developing problem. When symptoms are vague remedies are many and varying. But thanks anyway for the constructive criticism.
