Here my brooder is an old stock tank. I layer newspaper down on the bottom, and sprinkle shavings on top of the newspaper. Adding the shavings can extend the changing times to maybe two or three days with about 20 chicks early on, and then every two days as they get older. But they track shavings into the feed and water dishes with shavings, so I usually put something under the dishes to raise them a little more.
I remove the chicks into a "cleaning cage" and roll up the paper with the shavings on top, dump it all, lay down more paper, more shavings, add chicks. Usually only takes 15 minutes every 2nd or 3rd day. I've got brooder-cleaning down to a science now that I've hatched out and raised several HUNDRED chicks, ha ha ha!
The babies look great! So happy for you, they look very healthy. Can't wait to see the colors you get.
Here's one of my bantam cochins sporting her new shoe! She was born with crocked toes. I sent my son and his girlfriend to get me some bandaids and she bought hello kitty ones. I thought it made a very cute shoe. If this peeps is a girl her name will be Kitty!
