My chicks just seem too hot. I'm sweating in the brooding room. They aren't panting but definitely don't like the heat lamp. They did the first couple of days but are done with it now. I've raised it up and everything. Should I just unplug it? I'm using a reptile thermometer because it's all I had, and the heat is definitely too hot even when i just raised it up. I understand my babies avoiding the area. We don't want to go buy anything new like a chain or anything, so I was wondering if I could just unplug the thing and see how they do.

The area without the lamp it's in the 80s, under the lamp it's in the 100s. I'm either going to plug the lamp extremely far away so only a little heat gets in, or unplug it. I think they hatched may 28th. So about a week old.

Sounds too hot for sure. What is the wattage on the bulb? Can you get a lower wattage bulb, like a reptile bulb instead? Or is there a window in the room that you can open to let cooler air in? At a week old they may still need the option of supplemental heat for another week, but that's about it.

Its 250 watts, which I just read online is WAY too much for an indoor brooder. I can try to get a 100 watt tomorrow but I need to get them comfortable for at least tonight. I may be able to open a window but I'm worried about a draft

Unless the brooder is right under the window or you have strong winds blowing in, there's very little chance of enough draft inside a house to be an issue.

It's not right under but close, I don't think strong winds and the window is at the back of the house. I'll crack a window, plug the heat in away from the brooder, and try to get it to 90-95 in one corner. I unplugged it before you commented and they seem to be spaced out in two different groups, but bundled together so I think they may be cold now.
