Chicks on sand?

I'm also using sand. There is no smell, easy to clean, the chicks feet stay clean. I only have 3 chicks, and used one 60# bag in a Rubbermaid tub, and haven't had to add more at 4 weeks. I just scrape the top layer off each week.

Can I ask what kind of sand everyone is using? It seems like a less smelly option

I use all purpose sand. It is coarse, with different sized bits in it. It was $3.00 for a 60# bag at Home Depot. They have various sands by the cement mixes.

I'm setting up the coop this weekend. I will be using play sand in the under-roost area for ease in scooping, and once the grass is gone, the coarse sand in the run.

Mine have been on the sand since day 2 the first day I laid paper toweling over it so they would eat their food, but the next day, after they knew where the food was it was just the sand. I still however had problems with Pasty butt, too much stress during shipping I think and I lost 1 baby who came sick. I do love the sand though, but wanted to point out it doesn't keep them from getting PB. Kim

I just switched to sand - today is their first day on it after using shaving for the first 5 weeks of chick raising. I have a 6x4' plywood brooder (unpainted) with 2" of play sand in it. So far the chicks seem to like it! They have been eating it, dust bathing and of course, pooing on it. It isn't nearly as messy as the shavings, so far.
