Chicks outside??

Glad I could help. Has anyone used the bucket? I have 13 chicks coming at the end of July and I plan on keeping them I side for a week at the most. It's going to be hot here and wonder if the bucket would be a good alternative to a lamp.

several people use the bucket and it works wonders. You can ask about it on the "Natural Chicken Keeping" thread.

We live right off of Hwy 65 and there are always buckets along the roadside. I haven't picked any up but with people using them for nesting boxes and now this - I'm going to start picking them up and inspecting them. Maybe I can get some for free. Sylvia

My fear is getting one that had chemicals in it. Something that doesn't smell but is still dangerous. I will be extremely careful and picky. Sylvia

they really are not as fragile as you think if they are cold hardy birds soon as full feathered i put mine out bjgs and they did great ..also my sussex chicks

I put my chicks outside to free ranging and offer them the coop when they are fully feathered and don't need their heatlamp anymore. When they are fully feathered and don't need their heatlamp anymore, move them to their coop and just put their food and water inside their coop. Put them in the coop and keep the door open for them if you wish to free range. Don't worry, they won't wonder off far the first few days of introduction. They adjust to the new environment very quickly. I actually just moved my cockerals and pullets outside.

My little pullets are doing fine. They go inside of the coop at night by themselves. And they have already dealt with some pretty good wind gusts (that scared them at first) What I find really funny? They seem to like one side of the upper coop better than the other. It is the side closest to the door that leads to the ramp. Maybe it is cooler?? They want an escape??? I just don't know.....

I was worried that they would not have enough room, not so much now. Not if they are only using half of the coop.

If my outside run was bigger I would get more in a heart beat.
