Chicks outside??

I live in Reno Nevada. The temps at night do not get below 50 at this time of year. My chicks are 4 weeks old. The weather is normally dry here, but we do get some wind in the afternoons, normally regularly. How soon can I put my chicks in their coop permanently? I don't want to hurt them by rushing them but I would like my Kitchen back.

I just put mine out in the coop last night. They are 10 weeks old. I had another batch of chicks two years ago that I put in the coop around 8 weeks. So, I'd say around those times. The absolute earliest is a week or so after they are fully feathered.

When are they fully feathered? ANd should they be fine without supplement heat?

I'm guessing 8 weeks. No heat needed.
Less than 8, I'd provide heat.

I think they are fully feathered around 6 weeks? I'm not for sure. You should look it up. And like Seann^ said, if they are older than 8 weeks, they don't need heat. Otherwise, they do.

Thank you so much for the clarification. Now I know I have another 4 weeks of chicks in the kitchen. I can get them more acclimated to me this way. They are just now getting used to me and starting to get curious. They will even move towards my hand now instead of running away hysterically from it.

You are not that far away maybe 70 miles in a straight line but anyway I would have had my chicks outside a week or so ago in a shaded area out of direct sun .....




My chicks at 3 weeks old last February the problem in this area
is the wind and heat .....

Death Valley? Ya ..... I guess heat would be an issue. Do you have to have chickens that are Heat hardy?

These are Spangled Russian Orloff Chickens that do well in
Siberia but with a little help and care they live very well also ...





Now these are Molted Houdan chickens they need so much
attention like wet blankets and wet ground in the summer ...




Most of these guys just get a tub of water to cool of in .....





Now there is a celling fan in the chicken coop and the brooder
barn has several celling fans ......

I put my chicks out in the coop last week when they were 6weeks old. No heat lamp or light in coop. I'm in upstate New York and the weather has been decent only getting down to the 50s at night. Took them 3 nights to learn where to go at dusk but all is good. They seem to love it out there.
