My darn silkies are at it again. Just picked up Baycox for coccidiosis from the vet. Now my chicks are sneezing again. They sneeze constantly. Only one has clear discharge in is tiny nostrils. I can't go to the vet again. They sneeze constantly, and have been for a little white (Like almost four days), but this is the first time I've noticed discharge. Otherwise they seem healthy, I clean the brooder everyday and they are on medicated chick starter. What can I do? The white chick(The one who is showing discharge) seems to get a bit better after I massage it's throat. It'll stretch it's neck out for me to massage it. Why are they sneezing like this? Should I be concerned. They seem otherwise very lively... :(

It's possible they have a respiratory virus. A virus attaches to the chicken's cells and can affect the immune system, setting the chicken up for bacterial infections as well as coccidiosis.

See if you can find Tylosin. It's good for treating Mycoplasma bacteria.

I'm concerned if you take a wait and see approach, the Silkies could get run down from the cocciciosis and their bodies won't be able to withstand the respiratory bacteria.

Thanks. My Mum has already spent so much money on these chicks and their health so far. Could this potentially kill them? Or will it pemanintly harm their immune system? Can it just naturally resolve itself? This has been so stressful, and you've been a really great help. Thanks so much :)

Yes, respiratory infections can resolve on their own, but if they also are fighting off coccidia parasites, their immune systems may be overtaxed, and they may not be able to deal with both.

There are herbs that can build up the immune system. If you have access to oregano oil or fresh oregano, that can sometimes be as good as an antibiotic.

When we go to the supermarket next I'll try find some oregano, is it true that cinnamon and garlic might help? My stepdad should be home with the coccidiosis treatment anytime now. Also the chick only has discharge when it sneezes if that means anyting...

Do you have any feed other than the medicated? I believe when treating for coccidia that medicated feed should be stopped. But can someone else confirm that?
