I put mine on the soft rubber shelf stuff for two days, pine on the third once I'm sure everyone knows where the food and water were. I didn't have any problems. Haven't with even the most backward of the little suckers.
Then again, I all but live with them that first day to make sure they're all going good. I can hover better than a helicopter ever did.
I like the shelf stuff because I can throw it in the laundry and then dry it in the sun. No waste and I KNOW it's clean when I put it in there. I get enough so I can rotate it if it gets too dirty or damp unexpectedly. And I've always got a clean batch on hand.
We ordered 8 chicks and 2 ducklings. The women we talked to told us that there would be 4 extras, but from what everyone is saying here on BYC, we'll probably get more than that.
Oooo - will you build me a brooder too?! Yours looks Awesome!!! Your babies ought to be very happy in there.
I never used paper towel or newspaper, just shavings. They knew where the food was and the water, and I never seemed to have any issues with them or with keeping them clean or anything. I am sure your little fuzz butts will be just fine however you decide to do it. You WILL post pictures of your new arrivals, won't you?!
I knew you would. hee hee hee...
Oh, and I am pretty sure that Ideal offers the egg within an egg option. Where once the chick has hatched it will lay an egg within another 24-48 hours. Doubling your order within 2 days. It is a great deal - and it is all free!!! Or your money back. Pretty cool, eh? har har har... Congrats on your new little ones.
