Since I intended to take them outside on warm days I started my white leghorns on some scratch a couple of weeks ago. Usually I'll take a plastic coffee can lid, put it in their pen, and sprinkle the grit or treats onto it. They kind of run from the hand but once they see that the lid has made its way inside then all bets are off and the stampede begins. They'll scratch at it furiously until they see the hand reappear with the treat cup. Last night I had some try to climb into the cup out of eager zeal for treats. Once the treats start falling mayhem ensues and they don't care what happens. i.e. I can pet them.
The Seabrights usually get pushed out of the way and they are very skittish of "the hand" but I do try to give them treats off to the side. I feel sorry for them because when I got them they were the big birds and pushed the WL chicks around. They can't do that now.
